Liverpool’s midfielder Fabinho is on the brink of a two-match suspension from Premier League games, which could include a crucial match with Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite Liverpool’s recent 6-1 victory over Leeds, they remain in eighth place in the league, and their chances of making the top four looks slimmer.
However, they could still qualify for European football next season with a seventh-place finish.
Fabinho on the brink of suspension
If Fabinho receives a yellow card during the match against Nottingham Forest this weekend, he will be forced to serve a two-game ban, as he would have already accumulated ten yellow cards in the Premier League this season.
This would mean he would miss Liverpool’s matches against West Ham and Tottenham.
Fabinho’s latest yellow card was entirely avoidable, as he was forced to bring down Brenden Aaronson of Leeds after his teammates failed to clear the ball.
The Premier League’s rules state that players who receive ten yellow cards in league matches up to and including their team’s 32nd game will be suspended for two matches.
The Liverpool midfielder is having a season to forget. The Reds no. 3 has 0 goal contribution in the 2022-23 season so far. Although he is not the only one struggling with the form in the Liverpool shirt.
The Merseysiders do not have many options available on the bench for the Brazilian’s replacement. Thus, he still remains to be a key figure for the team.
Liverpool will be hoping that Fabinho can avoid another booking and continue to contribute to their push for European football next season.
While their top-four hopes may be fading, a strong finish to the season could still see them qualify for continental competition.
Jurgen Klopp’s team has 8 more matches to play in the league out of which only one will be against the Big Six (Spurs). While the rest of the fixtures, except one against Aston Villa, are against teams who are still below Liverpool in the league standings at the moment.
