Liverpool open to Minamino, Origi transfer talks after signing Diaz

Liverpool are closing on Luis Diaz and the Colombian superstar is almost certain to join. But the arrival of Diaz has put the future of Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi at Anfield in jeopardy.

With only a medical test remaining, Luis Diaz is set to join Liverpool in the January transfer window. The Colombian was thought to be a summer pursuit for ‘The Reds’, but interest from rival clubs spurred Liverpool into action. However, the Diaz transfer development doesn’t bode well for Origi and Minamino’s future at Liverpool. Both of these players attracted interest from clubs. However, Liverpool were understandably reluctant to sell.

Clubs eyeing Minamino & Origi

Leeds United and Monaco were keen to sign Minamino this window, but Liverpool have rejected at least one offer as per rumours. Both of these clubs would be keen to pounce on this opportunity but would need to match the £20 million valuation.

Although the Japanese international has made 27 appearances and scored important goals, but has found game time hard to come by. Moreover, Minamino is 27 and would like to spend his prime years playing football, not warming the bench.

Divock Origi has a similar case. He has only six months left on his contract and would most likely leave this summer. Provided Liverpool doesn’t trigger a contract extension, this might be the best time to offload Origi. The Belgian is adored by supporters and is a Liverpool legend, courtesy of his exploits.

But he would like to play first-team football and not make substitute appearances. Due to his lack of game time, the 26-year-old hasn’t been featured for the Belgian national team in a while. During this transfer window, Newcastle and Atalanta inquired about Origi but were denied.

Verdict

If the Luis Diaz deal goes through, it would be a great signing, as Liverpool looks to build for the future. But it would mean disbanding the old guard. Both Minamino and Origi are loved by the Liverpool faithful. It would really be a shame to see them leave. However, progress demands change.

The departures of Origi and Minamino not only provide space for new signings but also give room for youngsters to grow. Additionally, it would provide competition for places, thus raising the bar.

Although, the sight of their departure does leave one teary-eyed. Not only because of the insane moments that we were fortunate enough to witness but also because of what could have been.

Nonetheless, even if Minamino and Origi do end up leaving, they would leave with their legacy intact.
