Alisson saved by VAR twice in the game against Ecuador
Liverpool star Alisson was involved in two tense situations in Brazil’s 1-1 draw against Ecuador.
Having already secured a place in the 2022 world cup, Brazil have taken the international break to prepare for it by playing some friendlies.
While Alisson played for Brazil as his fellow Liverpool teammate Fabhino sat out due to a one-match suspension. If not for VAR, Alisson himself could have easily followed in his footsteps and could have received a suspension.
Alisson gets sent off twice, only to get called back by VAR
Brazil’s friendly with Ecuador turned out to be anything but friendly. The match produced only two goals, but it saw seven yellow cards, two red cards, two red cards turned by VAR and two penalties being overturned.
The first red card was given to Alisson’s counterpart Ecuadorian goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez. The 34-year old attempted a karate kick type challenge that hit Matheus Cunha’s neck.
5 minutes later, Spurs fullback Emerson Royal received a second yellow. Once Emerson got the marching orders, it was Becker’s chance in the spotlight.
In the 25-minute, he attempted a high foot challenge and made contact with former West Ham man Enner Valencia. Normally, this would result in a straight red card and initially, it did.
But once the referee checked with VAR, he realised Alisson had touched the ball first. Hence, it becomes a merge yellow card.
Then in the final moments of the game, the Liverpool goalkeeper came close to getting sent off for the second. During a punched clearance, he made head-high contact.
But once again, VAR saved Alisson’s day. After showing Alisson the yellow card, the referee checked with VAR to realise that Alisson had in fact touched the ball first.
Other than the rampage of cards, it was a quiet night in goal for Alisson, who is being coached by legend Claudio Taffarel.
In the next game against Paraguay, we could see Fabhinho, who has recently signed a new deal, playing and Alisson being replaced by Ederson.
