Liverpool appears to be on the verge of extending Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas’s contract during the international break.
Despite playing for just four minutes this season, the 27-year-old is highly regarded within the Anfield dressing room. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tsimikas is set to sign a new two-year deal with the Reds.
Currently, away on international duty with Greece, Tsimikas might return soon, following Greece’s Euro 2024 Qualifier against Gibraltar.
In a recent match against the Netherlands, where he faced Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, Tsimikas and his Greek side suffered a 3-0 defeat, with Gakpo scoring a goal.
Tsimikas, affectionately known as the ‘Greek Scouser’ by Liverpool fans, has been a valuable asset since his arrival from Olympiacos in 2020 for a modest fee of £11.75 million.
Despite not scoring for the club, he has provided 12 assists, with six coming in each of the last two seasons.
Kostas Tsimikas earns praises from Liverpool Boss
One particular assist earned praise from manager Jurgen Klopp during a game against Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, where he set up Mohamed Salah for a goal.
“The second goal was insane,”
said Klopp.
“Super counter-attack, top passes, the patience of Kostas is super – waiting until Mo is finally in the right place, then he just brings it over the line. Then controlling it [the game] again and it made it a great night.”
Although Tsimikas hasn’t had much playing time this season, his reliability and contribution to the squad make him a dependable member, and securing his services for another couple of years would be a big positive move for Liverpool.
Moreover, the Greek man also acts as a perfect substitute from the bench for the Scotsman Andy Robertson. Liverpool are yet to find a similar replacement for their other fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
