Liverpool will see their sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, leave at the end of the season, having just arrived at Anfield during the summer.
As per Sky Germany, the German had signed a short-term deal with the PL giants following Julian Ward’s exit. He would work with the Reds till January before leaving ahead of the summer transfer window.
Jorg Schmadtke to leave Liverpool this January
Schmadtke oversaw Liverpool’s midfield rebuild ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. He signed Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Endo, and Gravenberch, who have been crucial already this season.
The German sporting director will now look to do any last business for the campaign in January. Reports suggest that Klopp might want to add a centre-back to their squad.
Plettenberg claims that Schmadtke will fulfill his duties through the winter window, but “after that, the collaboration is supposed to end,” with both club and employee “delighted.”
Although he was there briefly, the progress made in overseeing Liverpool’s rebuild was significant.
The Sporting Director role is a position Liverpool needs to get right once Schmadtke leaves. Several people have occupied it since the departure of Michael Edwards during the summer of 2022.
A move for Max Eberl, who left his position at RB Leipzig in September, is unlikely. According to reports, the 50-year-old is due to take an executive job at Bayern Munich.
Christoph Freund is another who had been touted with a move to Liverpool. But he joined as Bayern sporting director earlier this year.
Liverpool have downplayed previous links with Paul Mitchell, the departing Monaco sporting director. Meanwhile, Sven Mislintat was quickly ruled out, and Tim Steidten has joined West Ham as technical director.
Owners FSG are likely to be on the lookout for a long-term option at present. Only time will tell who will get this crucial role at Anfield ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
