Liverpool are interested in signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson. According to Italian news outlet Tuttosport, the 24-year-old Brazilian has attracted attention from several Premier League giants including Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur, with a fee of around €50 million (£42 million).
Ederson has impressed the scouts during his time at Bergamo. He contributed significantly to Atlanta’s successful season, which saw the club clinch their first piece of silverware in 61 years by winning the Europa League.
His defensive skill was highlighted by his statistics. He ranks 72nd percentile for tackles and 85th percentile for interceptions among midfielders. This robust defensive performance aligns perfectly with Liverpool’s usual tactical approach.
Why Ederson For Liverpool?
Former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders explained the importance of maintaining the club’s high-intensity playing style and gegen pressing football, which was a hallmark of Klopp’s style.
Lijnders noted the necessity for a coach like Arne Slot for Liverpool who is known for a strategic pressing and possession-based football.
According to Lijnders, Slot’s philosophy resonated with Klopp and Ederson has the ability to adapt to a high-pressing game making him a suitable candidate for Liverpool.
Lijnders said in an interview with The Athletic:
“You need a coach like Arne who is close to what we tried to do over the years, in terms of having the ball in the opposition half, pressing, counter-pressing — he’s very strategical in that point of view.
He’s made good steps and now it’s the chance for him to make another big step.”
Ederson himself reflects on his development. He remarked how his game has evolved under Atlanta’s coaching staff. Ederson explained,
“The coach told me to be more aggressive, as I had some pace and power, so I needed to use those characteristics more.
This season, I got a more used to the high press, so I was able to be more attacking too and added that to my game as well.”
Liverpool are also rivalling Juventus for the signing of Teun Koopmeiners, who worked under Slot at AZ Alkmaar. But the main focus of Liverpool is Ederson right now.
