The season of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool has been a rollercoaster ride, marked by criticism and doubts regarding his defensive abilities.

However, since April, the right-back has experienced a remarkable upturn in form, contributing one goal and six assists in his last eight Premier League starts. This resurgence has coincided with Liverpool’s improved performance in the league, keeping them in the running for a top-four finish.

Liverpool set to extend the contract of Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool’s initial concerns regarding Alexander-Arnold’s performance led to speculation about a potential sale in the future.

However, recent reports from Football Transfers indicate that the club is now eager to secure his services beyond the 2024-25 season bringing much-needed clarity to the right-back position. While an extension until 2029 was initially considered, it is believed that a shorter-term agreement will be reached.

With the imminent departure of James Milner and the injury concerns surrounding young understudy Calvin Ramsey, Liverpool’s right-back position could have become problematic. Although Joe Gomez is an alternative, there are reports that Liverpool might consider selling the versatile defender.

While competition may be signed in the upcoming transfer window, any new arrival would likely start as Alexander-Arnold’s backup.

Alexander-Arnold’s statistics speak for themselves, having contributed 16 goals and 71 assists in 271 appearances for Liverpool. As the season draws to a close, the club is expected to initiate contract talks with the 24-year-old and other players whose deals are nearing expiration.

Potential positional change for Alexander-Arnold

Furthermore, there have been suggestions of a potential positional change for Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool legend John Barnes proposes utilizing the right-back in a new midfield role, allowing him to focus on his strengths in delivery and distribution while alleviating defensive responsibilities.

This strategic shift could create an opportunity for Calvin Ramsey, the talented young signing from Aberdeen.

He told Bonuscodebets :

“I think this will depend upon if Liverpool keep playing the same way and have Trent playing in this inverted midfielder role or just use him as a midfielder going forward.

If they use Trent as an out and out midfielder there could be some space for Calvin Ramsey.

When Trent does go into midfield from right back we have been exposed down the right side.

If Calvin does come in next season it will mean that one of the three midfield players will need to drop out which could mess with the dynamic of the rest of the team. Calvin has been unlucky with injuries.”

While potential positional changes and new signings could reshape Liverpool’s lineup, Alexander-Arnold’s role remains crucial, and his contract extension will provide stability and clarity to a position that was once uncertain.
