Liverpool recorded another 4-0 win to defeat Southampton at Anfield. The Reds started superbly and did not waste any time as Jota opened the scoreline for the former Premier League champions. While Robertson played a pivotal role in the left flank to find Jota.

The goal in the 2nd minute of the game was the last thing the Saints needed.

Robertson came back into the starting lineup after missing last weekend’s game against Arsenal due to injury and made a second-half cameo against Porto in the midweek. Moreover, he performed superbly against the Saints and showed everyone that he’s still the main man at left-back in the squad.

Meanwhile, Jota went on to score another goal in the 32nd minute. A simple tap-in by Jota from Salah’s cross to give a nice little cushion of 2 goals.

The three points were already sealed for Liverpool before halftime when Thiago’s deflected goal made it 3-0. What a week for the Spaniard.

After the break former Saints player, Virgil Van Dijk added more misery for Southampton as he scored from the corner to give Liverpool 4 goals lead on the night.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhutl came to Anfield with an adventurous formation but it did not pay off. Klopp’s men did not put a foot out of the gas and were creating lots of chances. The Reds looked likely to score more even after four goals up.

A good day at the office for Liverpool with another thumping win. Meanwhile, Southampton had a dreadful time at Anfield.

Klopp and Co. made a perfect response after West Ham’s defeat. In the last three games, the Reds have scored ten goals and conceded none.

An important victory to put pressure on both Chelsea and Manchester City on the top of the table.

Key numbers from the game

Liverpool have now registered 2+ goals in 17 consecutive games in all competitions. The Reds are the second top-flight English side to achieve this feat after Sunderland in 1927 (17).

The Reds have scored 3+ goals on 8 separate occasions already this season.

Liverpool are the highest goal-scoring side in Premier League this season and have scored 39 goals in their 13 games. It is their highest goal total at this stage of a top-flight campaign.

Southampton are the only Premier League side this calendar year to lose more away games(14) and to concede more away goals (47).

Liverpool 4-0 Southampton: Post match reactions

Klopp speaks on Jota’s performance and the importance of his contributions to the team

A good subject to talk about. Diogo: exceptional player, exceptional boy. It was for us two years ago, one-and-a-half years ago, a perfect signing because he has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs.

When asked about Jota’s character to come to Liverpool

Yeah but it’s the right decision. When you hypothetically talk to a player and he says, ‘Where will I play?’ – you decide about that with your performance, by the way, it’s not written in stone that we always start with the same line-up, all other players are really good in our squad as well.

But in the end it’s about making 35 really good games instead of getting somehow through a season and playing 50 games.

Klopp’s view on whether the club knows if Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah can play against Chelsea on January 2 before they go to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Not really, it’s early for that, we’re still talking. Yes [we are hoping].

Klopp’s reaction on the reasons behind the team’s prolific scoring numbers this season.

This year we had a pre-season that was a proper pre-season, which was incredibly helpful. Especially up front with Sadio and Mo, they had the longest pre-season I’m pretty sure they had for ages and that was helpful. So we could really work on a lot of things and found the stability back.

When asked about how much credit the players deserve for the form they’re in

Yeah, it is about that. My job is to set a team up, my job is to make a line-up, to organise training sessions, to help them create an atmosphere in the team, then on the pitch it’s helpful if they follow the tips or advice we give them, but they have to do it themselves, that’s how it is. The things that happened to this team in the last few years were special and that’s mostly because of the outstanding mindset and mentality of the boys.

What’s next for Liverpool?

Next up for Liverpool is ‘The Big Merseyside Derby’ midweek clash. The Reds will travel to their neighbours at Goodison Park as the City of Liverpool will be divided into Red and Blue.
