Klopp could possibly start second-choice Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher who could benefit from the competition and start against LASK.
The Reds would begin their journey in the Europa League and The Athletic reported that the Irishman could be preferred ahead of Alisson.
“The 24-year-old is in line to start this week after sitting patiently on the sidelines watching Alisson Becker, Liverpool’s tried and trusted No 1, who played all but one Premier League fixture last season. Kelleher’s solitary outing came in the final-day 4-4 draw at Southampton on May 28″.
Kelleher could start for Liverpool in the UEL opener
It might not come as a surprise for a secondary tournament, but there have been some strange decisions in the past.
Moreover, last season saw Alisson Becker be the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup stopper. However, the FA Cup was perhaps the most unusual tournament in which the Brazilian featured.
It is of course important to start our strongest team for every cup competition. But seeing how much the 24-year-old has impressed, he deserves to be given a chance.
His last performance saw more penalty shoot-out heroics against Derby County in the League Cup. This also led to Klopp stating ‘he is exceptional, he is absolutely exceptional’.
With the draw seemingly easier, the second-choice keeper deserves a chance over Alisson. We do know the Brazilian’s quality but the Irishman performs when given a chance. He has come clutch whenever Alisson was left out due to injury.
With Adrian left out of the squad, the only option that Klopp has is Alisson and Kelleher. With the West Ham game in 3 days’ time, Klopp might not want to risk Alisson for the UEL opener.
Moreover, he is a fan favourite and the fans would love to see him start against LASK on Thursday.
