Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has supposedly made an ‘inquiry’ about defenders, but former Reds player Xabi Alonso might block the deal.
As December draws close, the focus now shifts to the January transfer window. The teams could bolster their squad as they compete for different titles.
Moreover, the Merseysiders have been linked to several defenders. They are likely to sign a defender in Jan. But the manager has played down any chance of Liverpool signing a defender in the next month.
“You always talk about transfers like it is the easiest thing in the world. They all cost money, it must be the right player. We still have four centre-backs. Tell me a club that wants to sell a top, top center-half? Tell me one…”
Also, Joel Matip picked up an injury that would keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. Kostas Tsimikas also joins the list of injured defenders, with Andy Robertson already there.
Joe Gomez is the only available left-back option, and Jarell Quansah is the only backup for Van Dijk and Konate. This has opened the prospect of a new defender in the January transfer window for the Reds.
With the Reds still active in all 4 competitions, they would need reinforcements, especially with most of their first-team players unavailable.
Liverpool target defenders to sign in January
Piero Hincapie (Bayer Leverkusen)
Liverpool have been linked to the Leverkusen star Piero Hincapié. Jonathan Tah is also said to be connected to the Merseyside club. However, as per Kicker, manager and former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso will not let either player depart next month.
Jonathan Tah has a release clause of £16m, which becomes active in the summer. Meanwhile, Hincapié has not played as much this season, but the 21-year-old is one of Europe’s most highly-rated young defenders.
Moreover, Leverkusen are currently top of the Bundesliga and wants to take full advantage of the promising position they find themselves in.
Nino (Fluminense)
In other reports, Liverpool and Fulham have inquired about Fluminense defender Nino. Moreover, AS Roma and Feyenoord are also among those taking a look at him.
Nino, who is 26 years old, is a ball-playing defender with a one-year contract. But his current contract has a release clause worth only £6.1m, which could be a bargain.
Hence, looking at these options, Liverpool could go for either of them if they are to win the lot.
