James Maddison issues two-word verdict on Liverpool player’s red card against Tottenham on Saturday

James Maddison issues two-word verdict on Liverpool player’s red card against Tottenham on Saturday

James Maddison has shared his perspective on the red cards handed to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota during Liverpool’s dramatic match against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Following Joel Matip’s own goal in stoppage time, which secured three points for Ange Postecoglou’s team, Maddison spoke to Sky Sports.

Liverpool had reasons to feel aggrieved about the events at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) confirmed an error in disallowing Luis Diaz’s goal, as reported by BBC Sport.

Furthermore, Jurgen Klopp’s side ended the game with only nine players on the field.

Curtis Jones received a red card for a challenge that appeared to go over the ball and make contact with Yves Bissouma in a manner that looked particularly nasty.

Diogo Jota, on the other hand, was sent off after the break, receiving two quick successive yellow cards, with the second one stemming from an unnecessary lunge in an attempt to halt Destiny Udogie.

James Maddison on both the Red Cards

While many Liverpool fans may disagree with both decisions, James Maddison believes that the match officials got both calls right.

He stated,

“Jota’s definitely was.

The Curtis Jones one early on got shown on the big screen I think was a red card as well. I’m not sure Jurgen will complain too much about those too.”

In the case of Curtis Jones, it appeared that his contact with Bissouma was unintentional, with his foot slipping on top of the ball.

As for Jota, there was limited contact in both of his challenges, though he is unlikely to have valid complaints.

Liverpool certainly have legitimate grievances regarding the disallowed goal scored by Luis Diaz, and their fans are likely to be frustrated by the decisions leading to both red cards.

However, it’s important to note that they cannot appeal Jota’s dismissal.

While the referee’s decisions to send off Jones and Jota may have seemed reasonable, the overall performance of the officials left much to be desired on what can be described as a difficult day for them.

This is likely to leave Liverpool supporters quite displeased with the officiating.
