Martin Zubimendi choosing to stay at Real Sociedad has stunned Liverpool and next stage of planning from FSG might shock the fans.
The 2024-25 PL season is about to start and almost all the clubs have showed some level of participation and urgency in the transfer market.
However, the Merseysiders are one of the very few clubs who have been inactive in terms of any transfer business.
The former boss Jurgen Klopp left the club after nine-and-a-half-years and new head coach Arne Slot has been tasked with the major responsibility of guiding the club and the team in the post-Klopp era.
To kickstart the new season, the Dutchman needed to make minimal signings. But no signing has been made to facilitate Slot.
FSG have no Martin Zubimendi backup plan for Liverpool
Zubimendi was a major target this season for the Reds but he has chosen to stay loyal to Real Sociedad.
Despite this development, LFC owners have no plan to back the failure of the defensive midfield signing.
Reporting for The Times, journalist Paul Joyce stated,
“In Liverpool’s view, it was Zubimendi or no one. They do not believe there are available alternatives.”
The Anfield giants have not had a world-class defensive-midfielder since Fabinho left the club in the summer of 2023.
Although Liverpool signed Wataru Endo in the same summer, he was seen as the temporary fix for the major issue.
In modern football, the No. 6 position is considered crucial and one of the most pivotal roles in any team that is challenging for titles.
For example, Rodri has been significantly influential for both Manchester City and Spain in their recent title charges.
For a world-class club like Liverpool are, it is quite shocking and surprising to not have any proper plan of action in order to fix up a pivotal position.
In order to challenge for the prestigious titles such as the Premier League and the Champions League, FSG must think fast about some long-term solution to the defensive-midfield problem.
