Liverpool’s Dutchman could leave Liverpool soon Budesliga club interested
Mainz 05 are playing the waiting game, hoping to secure another loan deal for Liverpool’s young defender Sepp van den Berg. The 22-year-old Dutchman had a standout season on loan at Mainz, and the club is eager to bring him back.
However, Liverpool’s steep £20 million (€20 million) asking price is proving to be a major stumbling block. Mainz’s Sporting Director, Christian Heidel, is banking on Sepp himself to sway Liverpool’s decision.
Mainz director determined to get Van den Berg
Speaking candidly, Heidel expressed his hope that van den Berg might push for a move, either by lowering Liverpool’s demands or by agreeing to another loan spell at Mainz.
“We are a bit dependent on FC Liverpool. I know that he would very much like to return to Mainz. Perhaps the player’s voice will play a role in Liverpool’s decision.”
Van den Berg is in high demand, with several Bundesliga clubs eyeing the defender. But Mainz, where he thrived last season, are leading the race. The catch? Liverpool’s hefty price tag.
Reds’ valuation is too high
Heidel acknowledged that while it is within Liverpool’s rights to set their valuation, it is also up to the player and the buying club to meet those terms. Heidel hinted that the defender’s desire could be a key factor in breaking the deadlock.
“Of course, it is Liverpool’s legitimate right to put a price tag on the player. But then there has to be a club willing to pay that price, and the player has to want to go there.
“As of today, that’s not the case, which is why we still have a chance. If Liverpool loans him out for another year, then we are the perfect club.
“Sepp would confirm that as well. We are waiting a bit longer and preparing ourselves in case it doesn’t work out.”
Mainz are not banking entirely on van den Berg. If the deal falls through, they have other options, like Genk’s Mark McKenzie, though it is clear Sepp is their top pick.
With the transfer window closing in, the pressure is on. All eyes are on whether van den Berg will make his return to Mainz. The next few weeks could be pivotal for both clubs as they work through the challenges of this potential deal. Stay tuned!
