David Ornstein reveals that Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool are actively restructuring to prepare for Jurgen Klopp’s exit. FSG plans to appoint Benfica’s technical director, Pedro Marques, to their revamped football setup.
“I will leave the club at the end of the season,”
Klopp said in a video shared by the Liverpool media team.
The 56-year-old, whose Reds contract was set to run until the summer of 2026, attributed his decision to ‘running out of energy’.
Liverpool and FSG haven’t wasted any time in doing their best to ensure they’re as prepared as can be when they head into this transitional period.
David Ornstein on Pedro Marques
The esteemed journalist, writing in The Athletic and on his X account, claimed that Marques would be employed by FSG and utilize his expertise to attract global talent.
“Pedro Marques appointment to key role in new FSG set-up close to being confirmed.
Benfica technical director, another recruit by Liverpool owners after Michael Edwards (CEO of football). 41yo has a strong reputation + seen as a big coup.”
Ornstein wrote on his social media account.
Who is Pedro Marques?
Marques began his career at Sporting Lisbon in 2004, covering coaching, performance analysis, and recruitment.
In 2010, he joined Manchester City as a first-team analyst, working closely with former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward.
Marques then transitioned to a leadership role at City Football Group (CFG), focusing on coaching and analysis.
In 2018, he moved to Benfica as their youth technical director, where Liverpool encountered him during talks for signing Darwin Nunez in 2022.
Now, he’s poised for FSG, likely playing a key role in Liverpool’s post-Klopp era.
