Community Shield 2022- Liverpool vs. Manchester City: Player Ratings

Goalkeepers & Defenders

Adrian (GK) – 6/10

Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher were out with injuries. But Adrian took their places and made a hit-or-miss effort at the King Power.

The Spaniard made a series of straightforward stops. But he struggled with the ball and wasn’t good enough to stop Julian Alvarez from scoring the equalizer.

Being brutally honest, it was not good enough.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) – 8/10

Trent is the same as last season.

The 23-year-old was outstanding, starting the scoring with a deflected shot and displaying trademark poise in the attacking third.

Andy Robertson should have opened the scoring with one inch-perfect cross. And he defeated Jack Grealish at the opposite end.

However, didn’t track back well before City’s goal.

Joel Matip (CB) – 8/10

At centre-back, Matip took the place of Ibrahima Konate. He went on displaying the kind of cool, collected play that we have come to enjoy over time.

Erling Haaland attempted to overcome Virgil van Dijk by avoiding him. But City’s high-profile acquisition struggled to prevail.

The start against Fulham on Saturday appears plausible.

Virgil Van Dijk (CB) – 8.5/10

After recovering from an ACL injury last season, Van Dijk had a fantastic return to form, and he was flawless here.

With the exception of one errant pass out of bounds, the Dutchman breezed through the proceedings. He made some crucial interventions within the area.

There is a chasm between him and every other center back in the world as the finest.

Andy Robertson (LB) – 6.5/10

Robertson appeared to be full of beans on Saturday. And he is hopefully about to begin another exhausting season of nonstop appearances.

He should have squared it to a teammate after missing the opportunity created by Trent’s aforementioned cross. But he did well against Riyad Mahrez.

Not really classic Robbo; his shooting is still erratic. – but not too far away.

Midfielders

Fabinho (CDM) – 8/10

If only some people view the Community Shield as friendly, Fabinho must have missed the memo!

The 28-year-old was tough in the middle of the field, biting into tackles, fouling players. And he was occasionally getting angry with the referee, Craig Pawson.

In several of the summer games, Fabinho appeared a touch rusty. But this performance was much more typical of him.

Thiago (CM) – 9.5/10 (Man of the Match)

Enjoy this man while he is still here; what a footballer.

The finest midfielder on the field both on and off the ball, Thiago excelled against the Premier League champions.

Millions of fans will review one spectacular play in a small are. And he sure was entertaining to watch.

Jordan Henderson (CM) – 7/10

Henderson will complete the midfield against Fulham. As seen by his inclusion in the starting eleven in place of players like Naby Keita, Harvey Elliott, and Curtis Jones.

The skipper got off to a sluggish start, misplacing the ball a few times. But as the game went on, he improved and nearly set up Luis Diaz with a beautiful cross.

He relentlessly pressed and assisted Liverpool in outplaying their competitors. But going forward, he has to be more skillful with the ball.

Forwards

Mohammed Salah (RW) – 9/10

Someone looks fresh!

Salah ran himself into the ground toward the end of the previous season and, by his extraordinary standards, went off a cliff. But this performance was really encouraging.

The Egyptian King harassed Nathan Ake and Joao Cancelo while also helping Trent’s opening goal. And anytime he had the ball, he appeared to be about to perform a miracle.

He subsequently converted a penalty to make it 2-1 for Liverpool, starting the 2022–23 season off right.

Luis Diaz (LW) – 6.5/10

Diaz’s preseason was less than stellar. And he displayed less aggression than other players.

But as he and Kyle Walker sparred, his pressing off the ball was as ferocious as anyone. And he also supported Robertson all night.

Instead of bursting into the new season like a house on fire, it seems like he is easing into it.

Roberto Firmino (CF) – 7/10

Firmino has shown strong play this summer. And Jurgen Klopp made the call that he should have over Darwin Nunez.

The only mistake Liverpool’s No. 9 made was a terrible shot. But overall, he performed well holding the ball up, working hard, and establishing links with the midfield.

He still has so much more to offer.

Substitutes

Darwin Nunez (CF) – 9/10

Liverpool player ratings against Man City

What a way to make a debut!

When sent clear through, Ederson denied him. He was also substantially involved in the penalty, headed wide late, and then scored.

James Milner (RB) – 7.5/10

did well at right-back; at 56, he’ll still be around!

Harvey Elliot (CM) – 7/10

Kept the ball ticking.

Naby Keita (CM) – 6.5/10

Similar display as Elliot.

Fabio Carvalho (LW) – N/A

Not much time to make an impact.

Curtis Jones (RW) – N/A

Didn’t play more than a few seconds.
