After ruling out the long-talked-about move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, Liverpool have now turned their attention to Chelsea’s Mason Mount.
Since Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner all have contracts that expire at the end of the current campaign, the Reds are likely to strengthen their midfield options.
Jude Bellingham, a standout for Borussia Dortmund, was originally named as the Reds’ top target for the summer transfer window. However, the Reds have now chosen to give up on the wonderkid since they do not want to engage in a bidding war and devote a significant percentage of their money to one individual.
Mason Mount to join the Reds?
If Liverpool fails to qualify for the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp may have less money available to him in the summer. Liverpool have chosen to spread their money across numerous deals in order to bring in at least two new midfielders because Bellingham is expected to fetch a price of more than £100 million.
The Liverpool Echo reports that Mount is suddenly becoming Liverpool’s top priority target for the next summer transfer season. The England international’s contract is about to expire in 18 months, and negotiations for a new one have come to a standstill. Mount is unwilling to accept a seven-year contract, despite Chelsea’s interest in signing him.
The 24-year-old is also requesting a wage raise that would put him on par with the club’s highest earners. Chelsea may think about selling Mount if the two parties are unable to come to terms in the summer rather than taking the chance of him departing on a free transfer in 2024.
If the Blues decide to approve a sale, they will reportedly be seeking for bids around £50 million. The alumnus of the Chelsea academy has played 192 times in competitive matches for the senior team, with 33 goals and 37 assists.
Other targets for the Reds
Conor Gallagher, a friend of Mount’s at Chelsea, is also thought to be on Liverpool’s radar, while the Reds have also expressed interest in Matheus Nunes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ryan Gravenberch of Bayern Munich.
