Liverpool registered a remarkable record-breaking win over the Italian club AC Milan in their last fixture of the group stage. As we are now down to last 16 out of 32 teams, the round of 16 draws are going to take place on 13th December 2021, Monday. Let’s have a look at the probable opponents of Liverpool in the round of 16 this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s army have achieved a tremendous feat by winning all 6 of their group stage matches. Thus, in doing so the Reds became the first English club to win all of their group stage fixtures. While their opponents on the night, AC Milan did that way back in 1992/93 season.

Meanwhile, the other teams to achieve the same feat as of Liverpool & AC Milan are

  • Paris Saint-Germain (1994/95)
  • Spartak Moskva (1995/96)
  • Barcelona (2002/03)
  • Real Madrid (2011/12), & (2014/15)
  • Bayern München (2019/20), & (2021/22)
  • Ajax (2021/22)

Thus, Liverpool became the 7th team in the footballing world to win all of their UEFA Champions League group stage fixtures.

Possible opponents of Liverpool in the round of 16

The group stage fixtures of the UCL will come to an end on the 9th of December 2021. As Atlanta takes on Villarreal today to sum up the group standings of Group F.

With only one fixture remaining in the group stages, fans have already started looking forward to the round of 16 draws.

As Liverpool finished at the top spot in the group B they will now face one of the teams who will finish 2nd in their respective group. Moreover, the teams having already been part of a group won’t face the same opponent as they faced during the group stages.

Apart from this, the teams within the same country could not be drawn against each other in the round of 16.

Thus. Liverpool have 6 possible opponents against which they can be drawn for the first stage of knockout clashes.

  1. Paris Saint-Germain
  2. Sporting CP
  3. Inter Milan
  4. Benfica
  5. Villarreal or Atalanta*
  6. Salzburg

The Liverpool fans around the world will be eagerly waiting for the draws for the round of 16 and would be hoping that Paris don’t come their way so early in the competition.

What Anfield Home thinks?

The easiest draw could be one of that against Sporting CP / Benifica / Salzburg. While if we are not fortunate enough then either of Inter Milan / Villarreal or Atlanta would give a tough competition to the Reds.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain will be the one who can hurt us more than any other team. So if Liverpool are drawn against the French side Klopp will have to get ready for one of the toughest battle in this season so far.
