‘Brilliant news’: Ally McCoist now reacts to what he has heard from Liverpool

Liverpool fans have been treated to some positive news over the international break, with legendary Scottish pundit Ally McCoist sharing his excitement over Virgil van Dijk potential contract extension at Anfield.

As the Reds continue their strong start to the 2024/25 season, this development adds to the optimism surrounding the club.

Van Dijk set to extend Liverpool future

Liverpool’s campaign under new boss Arne Slot has been nothing short of electric, winning all three of their Premier League matches, including a stunning 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But now, the focus has shifted to what could be a major off-field victory – Virgil van Dijk’s future.

Van Dijk, one of the most important players in Liverpool’s recent history, has revealed his desire to extend his stay at the club.

Speaking in an interview, the Dutch defender confidently stated, “At both teams (Liverpool and the Netherlands) I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader, and I certainly want to remain that for the next two years.”

This clear message from the centre-back has fans breathing a sigh of relief, especially with his current contract nearing its end.

McCoist, speaking on talkSPORT, couldn’t hide his delight at the news, declaring: “Brilliant news. Delighted. Brilliant news. Brilliant news for everybody.”

His words perfectly sum up the feelings of Liverpool supporters who see Van Dijk as a rock at the back and a key figure in any future success.

What about Salah and Trent?

While Van Dijk’s willingness to extend his stay is fantastic news, there remain question marks over the futures of two other Liverpool stars – Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Both players are out of contract at the end of the season, and their futures are up in the air.

Real Madrid are said to have their eye on Alexander-Arnold, and fans will hope the club can convince the Scouser to stay.

Meanwhile, Salah’s rumoured move to Saudi Arabia seems to have cooled off, but with no firm links to other clubs, his next step remains uncertain.

Liverpool’s management team, led by CEO Michael Edwards, will need to work hard behind the scenes to ensure the club is prepared for any scenario. Losing any of these three players would be a massive blow, but with Van Dijk seemingly staying, the Reds can at least hold onto one of their most valuable assets.

Liverpool fans will be hoping this “brilliant news” is just the start of more positive updates.
