Liverpool academy youngster, Isaac Mabaya has agreed to a new contract with the club, becoming the latest to extend his stay at Anfield.
Fellow academy defender, Jarell Quansah also committed his future with the Reds on Friday. The Zimbabwean right-back also followed suit and Liverpool announced the agreement yesterday.
However, the length of the contract hasn’t been specified in the club’s correspondence. Although Mabaya is yet to feature for the senior team, he has been featured on the bench. He had an appearance on the bench in an FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury in January 2022. This is the closest the 18-year-old has come to a debut.
However, he did get first-team exposure during last year’s pre-season program. He played against the likes of Manchester United and Red Bull Salzburg.
Mabaya could draw comparisons to Liverpool star
The young right-back has been highly praised by the Reds’ elite development coach, Vitor Matos. He went on to say that he is really good.
“Isaac, his physical attributes are really, really good and he’s someone that can really give life to the right side of a team.”
His path of being promoted to the senior team from the academy could draw comparisons to the former academy starlet. It would be Trent Alexander-Arnold, who successfully made the step up from the youth level to the first team.
The Englishman has been praised by one of the finest players in the same right-back position in Cafu. Before being introduced to his recent hybrid playmaker position, he played 270 times in the right-back position.
He has helped his childhood club win multiple trophies including the Champions League. He was instrumental in their PL winning season, as they won their first title in the PL era.
Also, while playing in his traditional role he made a staggering 86 goal contributions. Moreover, if the 18-year-old is to emulate the performances of the Englishman, he has a long way to go. If at all Liverpool produce another exceptional right-back, it would be a great feat for the LFC academy.
