Salah keeps the World Cup dreams alive as Egypt reach the qualifying stage

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah led his nation to the final stages for the World Cup qualification. The captain sparked a triumphant return that garnered Egypt a 2-2 draw against Angola on Friday.

Salah played a delightful ball between the two Angolan defenders to Mohamed Elneny. The Arsenal midfielder smashed the ball into the goal to cut Angola’s lead to 2-1 at the end of the first half.

With one round remaining, Egypt now have an unimpeachable four-point lead over Gabon in Group F after Akram Tawfik equalised with a lucky deflection just before the hour mark.

Algeria, on the other hand, stretched its winning streak in all matches to 32 games. The African side thrashed Djibouti 4-0 in Group A in Cairo with West Ham‘s new hire Said Benrahma scoring one of the goals.

Algeria broke the African record set by the Ivory Coast in June and is now aiming for Italy’s 37-match world record set earlier this year.

Can Salah lead his side to World Cup glory?

Salah, who was recently named Premier League POTM and Goal of the Month on Friday, was the star of the show. Meanwhile, several fans sprinted onto the pitch during the game to take selfies with him.

Egypt’s assistant coach, Roger de Sa, praised the two-time African Footballer of the Year. He described Salah as

A respectful professional who is a pleasure to work with.

He is one of the best footballers in the world, but so humble. His behaviour in the build-up to the Angola match was exemplary

However, the only letdown for the Liverpool winger was extending his individual goal drought to four games after scoring in 10 games in a row.

Salah was also a peacemaker after a mix-up near the Egypt bench confronted to devolve into chaos shortly after his team levelled the scoreline.

While Mo Salah’s form has been terrific this year, scoring 10 goalazo’s in 11 apps in PL this season. The Egyptian, however, is yet to sign an extension with the Reds.
