Manchester City vs Liverpool: Preview

Jurgen Klopp – Pre-match press conference

The best two teams in England to flex their muscle against each other. But they will head into the game with positive results in Champions League Quarterfinals’ first leg ties.

Liverpool bamboozled Benfica 3-1 at the Estadio Da Luz, meanwhile City registered victory against the Spanish Burnley side i.e Atletico Madrid 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, in the League Manchester City and Liverpool are distant by one point in the league standings. In a tight battle at the top of the League table, a win on Sunday’s clash for either side would be a massive blow to land on their opponent.

Liverpool at one stage were fourteen points adrift of leaders City at one stage. Guardiola’s side dropped a few points and Klopp’s side’s remorseless 10-game winning streak in the league means there is just a point difference going into the game at Etihad.

There is all at stake for both sides. For Liverpool, a victory would be absolutely huge who are eyeing the ultimate triumph of the “Quadruple”.

Previously, when both sides met at Anfield the game ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Liverpool star Mo Salah scored one of the goals of the season contenders.

The Reds have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 20 wins to Manchester City’s 11, from their 49 encounters in the Premier League.

However, in the Guardiola vs Klopp era, things are very evenly split with five wins apiece and four draws, in all competitions.

Back in February Pep Guardiola described Jurgen Klopp’s Reds as a “Pain in my ass, all the time”. And definitely, Klopp’s army eyeing for City heist at Etihad in the standout game of the season.

Similarly, again it’s so even between both sides which is why the game is so hotly anticipated.

Moreover, The Premier League leaders face off twice in the space of the week. Both sides are also scheduled to meet in the FA Cup Semifinals at Wembley over Easter.

Team News

Liverpool came back from Portugal unscathed. Only a cut to the head of Fabinho will give Liverpool any worries, but he appeared only to need some slight bandaging to staunch the flow of blood.

Meanwhile, there appear to be no obvious injuries from the European battle. The Brazilian should be fine to start on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

Captain Henderson who came off the bench on Tuesday night should be back in the starting spot in the midfield of three alongside Thiago and Fabinho.

Moreover, one change in defense looks imminent as Joel Matip to start in place of Konate who scored his first Liverpool goal against Benfica.

The dilemma for Klopp comes in selecting his front three, given plenty of options. The German could continue with Diaz, Mane, and Salah.

Liverpool’s possible starting lineup:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho,Thiago ;Salah, Mane, Daiz
