Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has defended comments from Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk by thrashing Manchester United legend Roy Keane.
The Reds face their bitter rivals Manchester United on Sunday in their 1st PL clash of the season. On a more disappointing note, the match ended in a goalless draw.
Moreover, to everyone’s surprise, both sides shared a point despite the Red Devils having been in bad form until that match. Speaking at the post-match interview, Merseyside captain Virgil van Dijk expressed his frustration,
“We had most of the ball and created most of the opportunities. There was only one team trying to win.
Unfortunately it didn’t happen. That is why it is frustrating because we want to win every game. Especially when you play against a team like them.”
These comments from the Dutchman made Roy Keane uncomfortable. The former United skipper called van Dijk ‘arrogant’ and ‘disrespectful’ while ranting on Sky Sports.
Phil Thompson bashes Keane to defend van Dijk
Former Liverpool icon Phil Thompson took the side of the LFC skipper in this matter. Speaking to the Mirror, Thompson said,
“I don’t think he was arrogant, I just think he was giving his opinion. I really feel as though, you’ve come off that game, you now you’ve dominated, Manchester United have had that one chance with [Rasmus] Hojlund, and you’ve just felt frustration. Arrogance wasn’t in it.
And for Roy Keane to be talking about arrogance in people… come on, do me a favour. And I love Roy… but I played that back and he just kept repeating the word. Roy, just get a life!”
The frustration from van Dijk was legitimate because Liverpool was the better side. The Anfield side had 69% possession and took 34 shots. Still, the inability to score one goal was the cause of discontent.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
