Following a momentous year for both players, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane have been included on the final three-man shortlist for the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award.

CAF has announced the final three-man shortlist for its Player of the year award.

Liverpool‘s Mohamed Salah, Bayern’s new acquisition Sadio Mane, and Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy have all made it to the podium.

This is 3rd and 4th consecutive top 3 finish for Salah and Mane, respectively. While the Liverpool Duo has also won the accolade on multiple occasions. With Salah winning it twice and Mane once in the year 2019.

Salah and Mane are no longer teammates because Mane left Liverpool this summer for Bayern Munich after six years with the club.

Salah Vs Mane

They are now competitors in Europe. This is a situation they have become accustomed to in recent years. As they are competing against Egypt and Senegal, respectively, on the international scene.

They had already competed in two significant finals this year alone. Where Mane came out on top in both as Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations. And he also secured a spot at the 2022 World Cup at Egypt’s cost.

There is a compelling argument for both players to take home the Ballon d’Or in October. But there can only be one winner, just as there is only one winner for this week’s CAF awards.

Mane served as Senegal’s major inspiration while playing with a possible concussion and scoring the game-winning penalty in the AFCON final. And that’s why he appears to be the winner.

In the playoff final for a berth in the World Cup, he also scored the game-winning penalty kick after Salah had fired his own attempt over the crossbar.

Salah, however, deserves praise for his work with both Liverpool and Egypt, particularly for guiding his nation to both finals.
