On Sunday evening, Luis Suarez fulfilled a dream when he helped Nacional defeat the other Liverpool and win the Uruguayan championship with a brace.

Suarez made an emotional trip back to Nacional upon leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of his contract in July. This is the team where he started his professional career.

The 35-year-old came to the Montevideo team on a temporary basis after rejecting offers from Major League Soccer. It was done in order to pursue success in his home country of Uruguay.

Suarez found the net in a 4-1 victory over local rival Liverpool Montevideo on Sunday to clinch the Uruguayan Primera Division title.

Nacional was crowned champion without the necessity for a playoff final. This is because they had previously finished ahead of Liverpool in the aggregate standings due to the league’s significantly different organizational structure from that in England.

Suarez opened the scoring in the 50th minute. Thiago Vecino then evened up to force extra time. But another Suarez goal and two goals from Emmanuel Gigliotti sealed the victory.

Suarez’s contract at Nacional was set to expire at the conclusion of their season. Therefore, it may have been his last game for the team.

After the World Cup, he will consequently be a free agent. And the veteran striker has already acknowledged that a transfer to MLS may now be a possibility.

Suarez made 16 appearances on his return to Nacional, contributing significantly to the team’s successful season and Copa Libertadores qualifying. Suarez struck eight goals and provided three assists during this period.

He spent three and a half years with Liverpool in the Premier League, with 133 games, scoring 82 goals and providing 47 assists. The fact that his final match was against Liverpool added another oddity to an already intriguing story.
