Liverpool fans, brace yourselves — big changes are on the horizon. After a summer filled with speculations and zero arrivals, it appears the Merseysiders are finally gearing up for a significant signing.

None other than the ever-reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic thinks that Liverpool are zeroing in on a specialist No. 6, a role crucial for anchoring the midfield. the excitement is palpable as this move could reshape the squad’s dynamics and address a recurring issue of Liverpool.

The journalist wrote in the latest Transfer DealSheet,

“Despite Slot praising Gravenberch’s performance in the friendly against Manchester United, Liverpool have now identified a target in that position.”

He continued,

“It is worth keeping an eye on that situation this week, with Liverpool pursuing a specialist No 6 from outside of the Premier League.

They have turned down bids for Endo this summer, in part because of the tricky market in that position, but are now moving ahead with a signing for that role.”

The Reds, under Arne Slot, have been exploring various options to fortify their midfield. While Slot has praised Gravenberch’s performance in the pivot position against Manchester United, the club wants a dedicated, natural No. 6.

Liverpool’s midfield needs a player who can provide stability and control — qualities essential for a role that demands both defensive acumen and tactical intelligence.

What is Next for Endo at Liverpool?

Interestingly, Ederson’s name is floating in the transfer market. Though it remains to be seen if the Brazilian is the targeted No. 6. However, as details remain murky, fans are left guessing about the identity of the mystery midfielder.

After all this is clear as day that Liverpool are determined to sign a defensive midfielder this summer. This transfer inevitably casts a shadow over Wataru Endo’s future at Anfield.

Despite his crucial performance in the 2023/24 campaign, when the team struggled with a shortage of a classy defensive midfielder, the arrival of a specialist No. 6 this summer is not a surprise but an inevitable reality.

A new signing may bring drastic change in the pecking order. With all due respect to Endo’s performance, Slot’s strategic vision will make his long-term place at Liverpool very uncertain.
