€30M Move For Goalkeeper Hints At Alisson’s Exit: Giorgi Mamardashvili Liverpool’s Next Goalkeeping Sensation?

Liverpool are reportedly close to securing a £30 million deal for Valencia and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. If the transfer goes through, the rising goalkeeper is expected to be loaned out for the upcoming season.

The 23-year-old has garnered significant attention for his outstanding performances at Euro 2024. He had been recognized as one of the most promising goalkeepers of his age group.

Mamardashvili was asked last month about a potential move to Bayern Munich. He made it clear that his desire is to go somewhere as No. 1.

“Bayern still have the best goalkeeper in the world. Therefore, it’s currently not possible to move there. I would only go there if I’ll play. If I don’t play, then no.”

In an interesting twist, despite the potential signing, Mamardashvili would not immediately join Liverpool’s squad. Instead, he is likely to spend the 2024-25 season on loan at Bournemouth.

Bournemouth are a club with a direct connection to Liverpool through their newly appointed sporting director Richard Hughes.

This move would allow Mamardashvili to acclimate to the Premier League and improve his English, laying a solid foundation for his future at Anfield.

This anticipated transfer raises several questions. The primary one is about how Mamardashvili would fit into Liverpool’s plans with Alisson Becker still in prime form.

Alisson In Danger: Mamardashvili Set To Dethrone The Brazilian At Liverpool

Alisson is widely regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. And not to mention, he is only 31 and has at least two or three more peak seasons left.

His contract with Liverpool runs until the summer of 2027.

Though he is a key player for Liverpool, whispers of Alisson’s potential departure have circulated following the exits of manager Jurgen Klopp and goalkeeping coach John Achterberg this summer.

There have been rumours linking Alisson to Spain or Saudi Arabia. To ease this transition, Liverpool ensured that mentor Claudio Taffarel stayed on staff.

Signing Mamardashvili and loaning him out initially will make sense only if Liverpool are preparing for Alisson’s departure next summer.

If the plan goes through, it would mark an important shift in Liverpool’s goalkeeping strategy.

Mamardashvili, standing nearly two meters tall, has made 94 appearances for Valencia since joining the La Liga side from Dinamo Tbilisi in 2021.

Speaking to Liverpool.com last month, former Reds shot-stopper David James said he was impressed with Mamardashvili during Euro 2024, where he was working as an analyst for UEFA.

“Mamardashvili was amazing at saving shots.”

He said, noting, however, that no goalkeeper in the world is as complete as Alisson is at the moment. Alisson remains the best in the world, James insisted.

“There is no one out there at the moment who will change my mind at the moment.”
