Liverpool has a new transfer target in the name of Mikel Merino

According to Team Talk (via Liverpoolecho), Liverpool are keeping an eye on the Real Sociedad star midfielder Mikel Merino. The 25-year-old Spanish midfielder has 3 goals and 2 assists in 17 matches this season so far.

Moreover, recently He had also completed 100 appearances for the Spanish club. While Merino also use to play for Newcastle United in the 2017/18 Season, during his time at St. James’ Park he was only able to score 1 goal in his 18 appearances for the Premier League club.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s prime summer 2022 transfer target is a midfielder. After selling Georginio Wijnaldum, Liverpool’s midfield has struggled. On top of that injuries have limited Liverpool’s midfield options.

Although Fabinho does a good job in playing the holding Midfielder role but Liverpool needs a box-to-box attacking midfielder. A player who can score goals and sets up goals week in and out.

Is Mikel Merino the right man for Liverpool ?

Liverpool are trying to strengthen their midfield, this summer. With Jude Bellingham being the prime target as he is young and he is dominating the midfield for Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga. While Declan Rice could also be another prospect for midfield options this summer for the Reds.

Both of these players are in really good form and they are also the key players for their respective clubs at their roles. Which also makes them a target for many clubs. Thus, the clubs for which they play will increase the transfer fees as well by looking at their demand in the transfer market..

According to Liverpool’s financial reach, both the players are above what the Reds want to spend. So a perfect option is to find an alternative midfielder who is young and promising and more importantly fits the Liverpool style of play.

Merino has been dominant in the midfield, a versatile player who can hold the ball in mid and play box to box passes. In the past couple of seasons, he has become a key player in the Real Sociedad squad and a regular for the Spain international team.

Meanwhile, Salah and Mane waiting for new contracts will eventually stop the Reds from spending big. However, Liverpool must bring in some attacking options this winter either in the form of a loan or via paying a transfer fee.

As the AFCON is about to start and the Reds will be without the service of their golden wingers (Mo & Mane). Thus, with this, the winter window becomes an important part for Liverpool if they want to remain in the title race.
