‘Finalizing an agreement’ – Juventus Set to Snatch Bologna Star from Liverpool’s Grasp

Liverpool’s hopes of signing a promising defender this summer seem to be dwindling. Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Bologna’s central defender Riccardo Calafiori is almost certain to join Juventus.

The Italian giants are prepared to pay between €40m and €50m (£33.8m-£42.3m) for the 22-year-old’s services.

The defender, who had a stellar season with Bologna and impressive performances in the European Championship, was on Liverpool’s radar. With limited alternatives to left-sided centre-half Virgil van Dijk, the Merseysiders saw him as a perfect fit. However, it appears that Juventus will seal the deal.

Liverpool’s Missed Opportunity to sign Riccardo Calafiori

Liverpool have struggled to find top-quality left-sided and left-footed centre-backs. Calafiori was seen as one of the few players capable of fitting into Liverpool’s setup. Given the connections of Liverpool’s sporting director to the Italian market, this transfer seemed feasible.

However, history shows that not all Serie A imports have succeeded at Liverpool, with Alberto Aquilani’s injury-plagued stint being a notable example.

Moreover, Italian players often prefer staying in their home country, which might have influenced Calafiori’s decision.

It’s disappointing for Liverpool fans who hoped the club would secure this young talent. Missing out on such a player could be seen as a lack of initiative in the transfer market.

While Juventus moves ahead with finalizing the deal, Liverpool may need to look elsewhere to strengthen their defense.
