Joe Gomez get a new shirt number
Joe Gomez will go from wearing the number 12 jersey to the number 2 one at Liverpool before the start of the new season.
The Community Shield match on Saturday against Manchester City will feature Gomez’s new jersey number.
The defender came to Liverpool in 2015 and has worn the number 12 jersey ever since. He has made the decision to switch things up. Nathanial Clyne was the final Liverpool player to don the number two jersey.
Gomez will personally compensate supporters who bought “Gomez 12” shirts in advance of the new season with a like-for-like “Gomez 2” shirt.
Gomez has extended his stay at Anfield by signing a new contract. There had been rumors that he might leave Liverpool owing to a lack of playing time the previous season.
Since joining Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015, Gomez has made 142 appearances (stats via whoscored.com). He has led the Reds to win the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League, among other prestigious awards.
The England international, though, has also had a terrible time staying healthy. He went on missing much of the 2020–21 season due to a significant knee issue.
Gomez hopes to be in England’s World Cup squad in November. Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard was keen on bringing him to Villa Park from Liverpool. But the defender chose to compete for his spot with the Reds. Gomez has been part of 11 matches for the English National team. But he hasn’t been called up in the last 2 years. And the defender, therefore, was also not in the squad of the team that went on all the way to the Euro 2020 final.
