In the wake of Joel Matip’s ACL injury in mid-December, Liverpool finds themselves in the market for a centre-back, and Jean-Clair Todibo from OGC Nice has emerged as a prime target.
With a reported €60 million move on the horizon, both Liverpool and Manchester United are vying for the 24-year-old’s signature in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The injury to Joel Matip, requiring surgery, has heightened the need for defensive reinforcements at Anfield.
With Matip’s contract set to expire in the summer and uncertainty about his return to the pitch, Todibo appears to be a promising candidate to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s central defense.
Liverpool leading the race for Jean-Clair Todibo
Recent reports from Nice-Matin, a source close to the Ligue 1 club, suggested that Liverpool are in the lead to sign Todibo, citing his close ties with fellow French defender Ibrahima Konate.
The report speculates that the duo could form the future backbone of Klopp’s defensive lineup. Despite Manchester United’s interest in the towering six-foot-three defender, Nice-Matin asserts that Liverpool have a stronger chance of securing Todibo’s services.
However, renowned Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has contested this claim. Writing for Caught Offside, Romano refutes the notion that Liverpool is the clear favourite for Todibo’s signature, asserting that the situation will only become clearer “in the next months.”
He dispels the idea of a preferred destination for the French defender and emphasizes that Todibo’s potential move is slated for the summer, not during the current transfer window.
Romano states,
“Let me clarify once again, there are no clear favourites for the signature of Jean-Clair Todibo, and the expectation is for him to move in the summer, not now. It will take time before we know who the favourite is and what kind of evolution there will be in the next months. My information remains that OGC Nice don’t want to sell Todibo in January.”
As the transfer saga unfolds, football enthusiasts eagerly await further developments in the race for Jean-Clair Todibo’s signature, with both Liverpool and Manchester United keeping a close eye on the talented French defender.
