Former PL defender Jason Cundy labels Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk ‘overrated’ after the 2-1 victory against Fulham on Wednesday night.
The Reds once again snatched the victory the other way around as they executed another comeback from losing position this season. The goals of Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo made the scoreline 2-1.
Even though the whole team was in quite perfect sync throughout the whole match, for the only goal the Anfield side conceded, Virgil van Dijk was at fault.
The misdirected clearance attempt from the Merseyside captain led to Willian dribbling through defenders and finding the net.
Jason Cundy on Virgil van Dijk
Speaking about this mistake on talkSPORT, former PL player and pundit Jason Cundy stated,
“He can do this van Dijk. Sometimes he puts in displays where you go ‘that’s a bit rubbish’.
Not only does he head the ball in a direction that you don’t want him to. Personally, I think he is overrated.
I don’t think he is anywhere near the levels, consistently, of the likes of Sol Campbell, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. I don’t think he is anywhere near that, personally.
He’s had two good seasons. I know people will go on about the injury he picked up against Everton during COVID. It was a terrible injury. There’s no doubt he is top-class. But I don’t think he’s in that all-time Premier League XI. He is nowhere near it.”
The criticism from Cundy is a bit harsh considering it was a one time mistake. While it is very true that the Dutchman was not as good as he was before the injury in the 2022-23 season, he has redeemed himself this season.
The 32-year-old averages 1.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game in PL so far in this season. Leading from the backline he has been a rock at the defense (stats via WhoScored).
Many great players have made mistakes in their time but that has not been the reason to strip them off of their greatness. The mistake against Fulham was one of those mistakes for Virgil van Dijk which he will definitely make amends about.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
