Gakpo talks about areas of improvement and his bond with the Liverpool squad

The first and a half months of Cody Gakpo’s tenure at Liverpool have seen the Reds endure a poor run of results that has caused them to plummet to the middle of the Premier League.

Monday’s Merseyside derby between Jurgen Klopp’s team and Everton will be played at Anfield, and Gakpo will be hoping to score his first goal since joining Liverpool at the beginning of 2023.

Cody Gakpo and his relationships with the Liverpool teammates

Cody Gakpo spoke up about his personal challenges since joining Liverpool and acknowledged that he doesn’t always get along with his teammates on the field.

Gakpo’s arrival caused a lot of enthusiasm at Liverpool, but in the six games he has played, he has not assisted in any goals.

Gakpo said:

“I think everybody knows we are a little bit struggling in every area so it is more difficult for a new player to come in. But that doesn’t stop me from trying to improve. I can do a lot more.”

“For me, I see every difficulty as a possibility. I realise you don’t have all the time in the world so it’s up to me to perform and figure it out as quickly as possible, even though I might not have the best relationships yet.”

In their last seven games, Jurgen Klopp’s team has only won one game, and they will meet Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday. Gakpo was a standout for the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup, scoring three goals in five games until the Dutch were defeated by Argentina on penalties.

Cody’s answer to Koeman

Ronald Koeman, the current coach of the Netherlands, has questioned if Gakpo joined Liverpool too soon.

Gakpo:

“When I got the opportunity to come to a massive club like this, I don’t wait for five years more!. I see it more as a challenge.”

Before joining Liverpool, Gakpo had played in 14 Eredivisie games for PSV Eindhoven, scoring nine goals and dishing out 12 assists. Contrast that with his recent performances for Liverpool, which the 23-year-old said had an impact on him.

Gakpo thinks although joining a squad that has won every game would be incredible, he doesn’t believe it is undesirable. In situations like this, you learn things about yourself that you didn’t know.

While Liverpool fans are eager to see Cody Gakpo score his debut goal when they face the other half of the Merseyside.
