Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has voiced his frustration over the new Champions League format, set to add two extra games to the group stage.
While the fans might be excited, Alisson isn’t holding back his thoughts on the busy calendar ahead.
What Alisson said on playing more games
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash against AC Milan at the San Siro, the Brazilian keeper shared his concerns. “For the supporters, it’s amazing,” Alisson said.
“More games, bigger games, big teams playing against each other. For us as players, it’s always a good idea to add some games to a calendar that is not busy. I am being ironic a little bit.”
Alisson made it clear that players weren’t consulted about the schedule changes, sarcastically adding, “Maybe our opinion doesn’t matter at all.” The new “Swiss system” will see teams play eight group matches, a workload Alisson feels is being ignored by football’s decision-makers.
“We understand people want more games, but the reasonable thing would be for all the people responsible for organising the calendar to sit together and listen to all the parts, including the players.”
Despite these concerns, Alisson is focused on Liverpool’s immediate task. “What I want is to give the best in all the games that I play,” he said. But with the packed calendar, he wonders if football is heading in the right direction.
Slot’s thoughts on Milan and rotation
Liverpool boss Arne Slot was more focused on the game against Milan, especially after the Reds’ surprising loss to Nottingham Forest last weekend.
Slot admitted the Forest defeat was tough to take but shrugged off any blame on squad rotation. “Too many players didn’t reach their normal level. That has nothing to do with rotation,” he said.
As Liverpool prepares for the big European night, fans may get their first glimpse of new signing Federico Chiesa in action, though Slot hinted the Italian winger is still not ready for a full 90 minutes.
With Milan up next, Liverpool have a chance to bounce back—but it seems Alisson’s frustrations with football’s demanding schedule won’t go away anytime soon.
