Liverpool target Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane as potential Mo Salah successor
Liverpool are to target the former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane for January move since Salah’s future remains uncertain.
Mohamed Salah, whose future at Anfield is still uncertain, may be replaced by Leroy Sane of Bayern Munich, whom Liverpool is reportedly considering moving for.
Salah, who joined the Reds for £36.9 million from Roma in 2017, has become one of the club’s all-time top scorers with 214 goals.
However, his current contract, which earns him £350,000 a week, expires at the end of the season, leaving Liverpool with a critical decision about his future.
Though there are strong indications that Salah will extend his stay at Anfield, including a positive update from former teammate Adrian, Liverpool are preparing for a worst-case scenario.
According to Caught Offside, manager Arne Slot is requesting the Reds to look for Sane as a backup plan if Salah does not renew his contract.
Bayern contract issues cause Liverpool to look at Leroy Sane
Sane’s deal at Bayern Munich also expires next summer, which leaves Liverpool with two routes to the 28-year-old winger.
The choice is between a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool in January or negotiating a low-cost transfer during the winter window.
The former Manchester City player has been a key contributor at Bayern, with 48 goals and 50 assists in 175 appearances, raising interest from other top sides of the Premier League, such as Arsenal and Newcastle.
While Sane expressed openness to extending his stay at Bayern Munich in a June interview with Sky Sports Germany, recent reports from Football Insider suggest that contract negotiations have hit a snag. Bayern are reportedly offering Sane a reduction in his current £326,900 per week wages, which has not gone over well.
Though Sane’s statistics, especially in terms of dribbles and key passes, are similar to Salah’s, replacing the Egyptian winger will not be an easy task. Nonetheless, Sane’s combination of technical ability and directness makes him an attractive option for Liverpool.
If Salah leaves, Tony Cascarino has suggested Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford as Sane’s replacement. With a £50 million valuation, Mbeumo would be a more costly option, but his performances in the Premier League have earned him high praise.
As Salah’s contract situation unfolds, Liverpool may have to act quickly to secure his replacement.
