The agent responsible for arranging Moises Caicedo’s record-breaking move to Chelsea has emphasized that the former Brighton and Hove Albion player was never tempted by a rival offer from Liverpool.
In mid-August, news broke that Liverpool had submitted a remarkable £111 million bid for Moises Caicedo, leading to questions for Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp, who in 2016 vowed never to sign a player for nine figures in response to Manchester United’s Paul Pogba signing, found himself addressing the changing landscape of football.
He acknowledged that circumstances had evolved since then and that he had realized his initial stance was no longer applicable.
Liverpool’s pursuit of Caicedo, despite their interest, did not result in securing his signature.
Chelsea ultimately won the race for the player, and Klopp’s team has continued with four wins in their first five games of the season. However, Liverpool still seeks a natural “number six” for their squad.
This summer, the Reds faced difficulties in attracting certain targets, including Sofyan Amrabat, Mason Mount, and Romeo Lavia, who is now Caicedo’s teammate at Stamford Bridge.
This raised concerns about Liverpool’s ability to compete in the transfer market.
Andrea Pellegatti on agent influencing Liverpool rejection
Andrea Pellegatti of the EPIC Sports Agency via Sport Italia, clarified that Moises Caicedo had a clear preference for Chelsea.
“The boy only wanted Chelsea,
(Chelsea) had started to show their interest consistently since January.”
He explained that Chelsea had shown consistent interest in the player since January, and this played a pivotal role in Caicedo’s decision.
Brighton’s CEO, Paul Barber, confirmed that Caicedo had chosen to reject Liverpool’s offer, which would have made him their all-time record signing at £116 million (equivalent to 133 million euros).
Pellegatti highlighted the player’s impressive progression in England, particularly during his loan spell in Belgium under Roberto De Zerbi, which ultimately led to intense competition between Chelsea and Liverpool for his signature.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
