As the Euro 2024 is finally coming to an end, all eyes are now on Spain and England. After the semifinal, Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk was quite angry about referee Felix Zwayer. It happened after England got a penalty and the Netherlands star was not at all satisfied with it.
Virgil Van Dijk Lashes Out At Referee Over Controversial Decision
Fans were hooked up for the last minutes of every match of the 2024 Euro. On 11th July, England faced off Netherlands in the second semifinal.
Unfortunately, for the Netherlands, England stepped out victorious with a 2-1 win. Virgil Van Dijk was disappointed and his anger for referee Zwayer was quite evident.
In the first 8 minutes of the match, everything was going well especially after Xavi Simons placed the Oranje at 1-0.
Shortly after ten minutes of that, one decision changed everything for the Liverpool captain and his teammates.
Denzel Dumfries blocked Harry Kane in the penalty box; the referee saw nothing wrong until, he looked at the VAR.
As a result, England got the reward of a penalty, which led them levelling at 1-1. Virgil Van Dijk was extremely angry at Felix Zwayer due to this decision.
The Liverpool captain lashed his anger out later when the Netherlands did not get a corner kick. Instead, England got their shot at a goal kick.
The Dutchman was not only angry that Felix Zwayer paved the way for Harry Kane’s opening goal.
Virgil van Dijk, while speaking to beIN SPORTS, said that he noticed something strange from the referee after the match ended.
“I don’t know if I should say something about this but I said it outside to the Dutch media. I think it says it all when the referee went inside quite quickly after the game. I had no time to shake his hand.”
