Trent Alexander-Arnold is all set for a new Premier League record after claiming his tenth League assist of the season at the weekend.

The 23-year-old has already confessed he is driven by a desire to go down in history as one of the Premier League’s best-ever right-backs.

The Scouser has already smashed assist records for a defender in Premier League, having bagged 13 in 2019/20, and he’s on track to better that tally this year.

Trent Alexander-Arnold revealed (via the Liverpool Echo):

I want to break as many records as I can,

I want to make history with my performances and my tallies, and go down in history

For me it is about contributing as much as I can for the team and making sure we win. The team trophies are much more important than the personal ones but to use as motivation I do like to set myself targets.

The very minimum is always double figures and I’ve hit that already. I just want to be contributing as much as I can. I would probably say this season would be 15 to 20 in the league.

And keep ahead of Andy Robertson? Yes, so far!

But the real challenge for Trent is getting help from his Liverpool teammates. The forwards need to capitalize on the deliveries put in by the right-back.

The balls Trent feeds in the box sometimes look very delicious. But at times the forwards disappoint him by not moving into the space.

The record number of assists in a single Premier League campaign is 20 (Thierry Henry 2002/03 and Kevin De Bruyne 2019/20), so he is halfway there as it stands. Trent can achieve that mark for sure but It all depends on the forwards to convert the chances.

How close is Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson to Leighton Baines’ Premier League record?

Liverpool fullbacks are always a threat offensively from their respective flanks. On Sunday against Brentford, the club’s full-backs again proved pivotal to their triumph.

Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson looked as attacking threats throughout the game. The fullback duo having eventually been rewarded for their efforts courtesy of the assists for Fabinho and Oxlade-Chamberlain respectively.

And, in the process, both drew closer to etching their names into the memorable history books of the Premier League.

As per William Hill, Robertson is now just nine assists off breaking Leighton Baines’ record as the all-time top assisting defender in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold, in 56 games fewer than teammate Robertson, sits just two assists back of the Scotsman.
