According to reports Liverpool had previously agreed to sign Newcastle United’s star for £75 million but the deal collapsed due to the magpies’ decision.
Up until the very end, Liverpool’s transfer window was largely quiet, that is until they signed Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Liverpool agreed to sign Newcastle star
It has been reported though that Liverpool and Newcastle United had originally reached an agreement on a contract worth £75 million which included Joe Gomez joining the Magpies for £45 million.
Their goal was Anthony Gordon, Newcastle made the decision to retain the 23-year-old attacker despite Gordon being prepared to sign with Liverpool after they found a way to pay off other players.
Chiesa would not have been pursued by Liverpool unless another attacker had left if the Gordon deal had gone through.
Liverpool finally decided to keep Luis Diaz and add Chiesa as a flexible attacking option despite considering signing Gordon who demonstrated excellence with 21 Premier League goal contributions the previous season.
Despite contributing just 13 goals in a less fruitful season Diaz has made a strong start to the new campaign and Chiesa’s arrival is thought to be a calculated move to strengthen Liverpool’s attacking depth.
Compared to Gordon, Chiesa is a more versatile option because of his ability to play a variety of forward positions and the team may benefit greatly from his signing on a cheap contract.
Liverpool have been smart in this transfer window, and they are unbeaten going into the international break after 3 Premier League games.
