According to Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are close to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as their next sporting director.
In November of last year, the current Reds’ sporting director, Julian Ward announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of this season. He came out to speak about his departure just after months of replacing Michael Edwards in the role.
Ward has, in fact, agreed to join Ajax and help the Dutch team rebuild after Ten Haag and many key players left the club last season.
Meanwhile, the Reds have been searching for the 41-year-old’s replacement since. Moreover, Klopp said that he wasn’t involved in the club’s talks for a new sporting director.
“I am not involved in the talks. Maybe the talks around, yes, but I am not the person in the club who can give a real answer on where it stands.
That is in the hands of other people, but from what I have heard, it is all going in the right direction.”
Jorg Schmadtke to be Liverpool’s new sporting director?
As reported by Romano, Liverpool are set to announce their new sporting director in Jorg Schmadtke. Schmadtke was a goalkeeper in his playing days and later moved to football administration.
Moreover, the German has been Wolfsburg’s sporting director for 5 years before leaving the role at the start of February.
The Italian journalist tweeted regarding the matter and said that ‘he has accepted the role.’
“Liverpool are now close to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as [their] new sport director. The agreement is imminent — he has accepted the role.
[The] former Wolfsburg director will work on the project/new signings together with Jurgen Klopp who will remain crucial in the transfer strategy.”
Liverpool are set to be busy in the summer transfer market after a disappointing season. Should they qualify for Europe, their chances of landing bigger names would be easier.
