Sepp van den Berg hinted at the possibility of making a permanent move away from Liverpool as he moved to Mainz this summer.
The Dutch defender has moved to Mainz on a season-long loan deal this summer. His last spell in Germany with Schalke did not go as planned due to injury.
The 21-year-old was able to secure only 9 appearances for the German side. He managed to average 0.6 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game (stats via WhoScored)
His future looked a little concerning as he suffered an injury during the U-21 Euro Championship with Netherlands U-21 national team.
But he will continue his third consecutive loan spell after Preston and Schalke. The German club confirmed his arrival via their official Twitter handle.
Sepp van den Berg looking for a permanent move out of Liverpool?
As he experienced a year in Germany, the defender has also admitted his desire of playing in the Bundesliga.
And now, Klopp’s former club had indicated that Van den Berg could possibly remain in the Bundesliga after his season-long loan. However, the terms of the deal between the two clubs will stay “undisclosed” for now.
In a recent interview with BILD, the Dutchman expressed his feelings,
“I like Germany and the Bundesliga. Of course I can imagine not staying in Mainz just for one season.
Liverpool are a great club, perhaps the biggest in the world. But at the same time, it is also difficult to assert yourself there.”
An earlier report via the German media outlet suggested that the Mainz loan deal also includes a buy-option. If the 21-year-old manages to impress the German club, then they will definitely buy him.
Van den Berg has only made 4 senior appearances for the Anfield giants and all of them came in the domestic cup competition during the title-winning 2019-20 season.
If the club thinks of him as a future prospect of the club then they should act upon it by retaining him from the next season and giving him some play-time.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
