Liverpool fans had plenty to smile about after Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to his right-back role for England in their 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland.
It’s been four long years since he last started in that position for his country, and the result didn’t disappoint.
England’s victory in Dublin kicked off their UEFA Nations League campaign, and all eyes were on interim manager Lee Carsley’s starting lineup.
With Kieran Trippier retiring, Kyle Walker unavailable, and Reece James still battling injuries, Alexander-Arnold finally stepped back into a familiar role that Liverpool fans know all too well.
And while he didn’t grab a goal or assist, the Liverpool playmaker was at the heart of England’s opening goal.
A classic Trent pass sliced through Ireland’s defense, setting up Anthony Gordon for a chance. Although Gordon couldn’t finish, the play led to a recycled attack, ending with Declan Rice netting the opener.
Roy Keane praises Trent playmaking
Roy Keane, always one to call it as he sees it, praised Alexander-Arnold for his influence in the game. “Brilliant, fantastic,” said Keane, highlighting Trent’s pinpoint pass that led to England’s breakthrough. “If there’s one player you don’t want to give time to on the ball in that area, it’s Trent.”
The former Ireland captain criticized his country’s defense for allowing Alexander-Arnold so much time, knowing full well the danger that comes from a Liverpool player with his vision.
As Keane pointed out, “Gordon should have scored, and Rice did what he does best. Beautiful finish.”
More England caps for Trent?
With 29 caps for England, most of which haven’t been at right-back, it’s clear many fans feel Alexander-Arnold has been underused.
But with Gareth Southgate’s departure, there’s hope for a more attack-minded manager who will play Trent where he shines best—on the right flank.
Trent’s return to form at right-back is music to Liverpool supporters’ ears. After all, it’s no secret that when he’s pulling the strings from defense, anything can happen—whether it’s in a red shirt or England white.
