Paul Merson predicts the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool

Paul Merson has predicted the outcome of this weekend’s FA Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.

Background

Chelsea and Liverpool go head-to-head this weekend for the FA Cup. The two sides are facing off for the second English cup title. The first one being the Carabao Cup which the Reds’ won in the penalty shootout.

Tuchel’s blues come in this final, losing the last two FA cup finals.

Chelsea lost to their noisy neighbours in the 2020 Final. While they came up short against Leicester last season.

Klopp’s Reds come to this final for the first time since 2012. Moreover, the Merseyside giants haven’t won this silverware since 2005.

The Reds will also be missing their star midfielder, Fabinho, for the game. The Brazillian is ruled out for the game following a hamstring injury against Aston Villa.

Paul Merson’s FA Cup Final Prediction

Merson has predicted that Chelsea will win the game 2-1.

Merson believes the absence of Fabinho is gonna be a huge disadvantage for Liverpool. Moreover, Chelsea can capitalize and bring home the trophy.

Merson said to Sportskeeda in an Interview:

Injuries to Fabinho and Mateo Kovacic will obviously come as massive blows to their respective teams, but if reports are to be believed, the Chelsea midfielder could be available for the FA Cup final if he makes a swift recovery. Fabinho, however, has officially been ruled out and Liverpool usually lacks discipline when he doesn’t play, as he knits everything together

Merson continued:

When I first thought about this game, I was inkling towards a draw, but I fancy Chelsea to win it 2-1 as Fabinho’s absence swings the game in the Blues’ favor. The Carabao Cup final ended 0-0, but the number of chances created on the night was absolutely mindblowing.

Merson also suggested that if by any means the match goes onto penalties, Chelsea should not bring in Kepa and stick to Mendy. As the Senegalese goalkeeper has been in a sensational form since his arrival from Rennes in 2020.

It will be really exciting to see what unfolds when both giants collide this weekend for the trophy.
