Manchester City defender John Stones suffered an injury in the UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid.

John Stones looked uncertain to start the game, after missing the Watford game last weekend. However, the player was named in the starting XI by Pep Guardiola.

This puts Man City in a tough situation for, the fight for the Premier League title with Liverpool.

Injury dents Manchester City title hopes

Manchester City have been pretty much at the top of the table for quite a long time now. But another injury puts their position at the top at risk.

John Stones had to be pulled out of the game in the 36th minute itself and was replaced by Fernandinho who played a great part in one of the goals.

Man City right-back Kyle Walker is also potentially ruled out of the season with an injury.

Further injury to fellow defender John Stones who played as right-back just makes the defence weaker.

Pep Guardiola speaks out

Man City Manager Pep Guardiola was thankful to his defenders and praised them after the game,

Just say thank you both, John for the effort and Ferna (Fernandinho), who has only played once there, in second season at right-back.

Said Pep

It is not easy to control Vinicius he is an outstanding player, but he did everything. I knew he would play well.

Man City boss

The Citizens defense really managed a way to get a win out of the high scoring tie. Thus, the Sky Blues were able to defeat Real Madrid by 4-3 in the 1st leg of the semi-final of UCL.

Opportunity for Liverpool

Liverpool have a massive chance to take advantage over City, as they have a full-fledged squad available.

The Reds would hope for City to drop 2 points or probably even 3 in any of their upcoming games.

Liverpool plays 9th placed Newcastle United after their Champions League endeavour.

They would be keen on maximizing this opportunity.

Given the timing of the injury, Pep would certainly have to drag his team to the finish line. As there are just a handful of games left.

It is not going to be easier for Liverpool as well, to maintain good shape going into the final month of the season.
