In a significant setback for Liverpool, manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that star forward Diogo Jota is set to be sidelined for ‘months’ due to a knee injury sustained during the recent victory over Brentford.
The injury crisis comes ahead of a crucial week for the Reds, with Luton visiting Anfield in the Premier League before a Carabao Cup final showdown against Chelsea.
Diogo Jota Joins the List
Jota joins an extensive injury list that includes Curtis Jones [ankle], Alisson [hamstring], Trent Alexander-Arnold [knee], and Dominik Szoboszlai [hamstring].
Addressing the media in a pre-Luton press conference, Klopp expressed the team’s challenging situation, emphasizing the absence of key players and acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding Alisson’s recovery timeframe.
The injury toll continued to rise during the Brentford clash, with Darwin Nunez also facing doubts for the upcoming fixtures.
Klopp, however, refrained from providing details on rumours regarding setbacks for Mohamed Salah and Nunez.
Klopp’s press conference highlighted the reliance on young talents to fill the void left by the injured stars, stating,
“I trust our youngsters to step up.”
The manager outlined the injuries suffered by Jota and Jones, with Jota’s knee issue sidelining him for an extended period and Jones facing an indefinite absence due to a bone ligament problem.
While Klopp admitted the challenging situation, he also hinted at the potential return of long-term absentees like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai, who are making progress but are not yet available for team training.
Liverpool’s injury concerns extend beyond the immediate week, with Thiago [hamstring], Joel Matip [ACL], Stefan Bajcetic [calf], and Ben Doak [MCL] all ruled out with long-term issues.
As Liverpool face crucial fixtures in both domestic competitions, the absence of key players, especially Jota, poses a significant challenge for Klopp and his squad. The manager’s trust in the younger players will be put to the test as they navigate through this challenging period in the season.
