Liverpool, the clock is ticking, and it is not just the fans feeling the heat. Everton’s former chief, Keith Wyness, has stepped up to remind the Reds that time waits for no one — especially when you are the only Premier club yet to make a summer signing.
Yep, you read that right. Liverpool, a club known for their swift moves and calculated decisions, are now the lone wolf left behind in the transfer market. How is that for a plot twist?
Speaking on Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness did not mince his words. The 66-year-old, who knows a thing or two about running a football club from his time as CEO at Goodison Park, has dropped a little nugget of wisdom:
“They’ve still got time, but the clock is starting to tick for them.
“It’s now around two weeks to go, and I would start to get concerned if they’re in the same situation next week.
“Time pressure then does start to become a factor – that goes for every negotiation.
“But there is still the ability to craft deals.”
And with just two weeks before the season kicks off, it is no longer just a friendly reminder, but it is a full-on warning siren.
Wyness concerned about Liverpool
Wyness has been patient, even defending Liverpool’s strategy of taking their time to assess the squad and work closely with their new manager, Arne Slot, and sporting director, Richard Hughes.
“I’ve defended Liverpool taking their time to review the squad and work with the new manager and sporting director.”
But now, patience is running thin, and the concerns are starting to creep in. The Reds’ pursuit of a marquee signing has hit some bumps in the road. Not to mention the latest being the collapse of a deal for Martin Zubimendi.
It seems that Slot is pushing hard for Hughes to secure a proven midfielder. But so far, Liverpool’s transfer dealings have been more of a slow burn rather than a blazing success.
With the Premier League season just days away, Liverpool are set to face Ipswich Town in the season opener. This will mark Slot’s first competitive game in charge as a Liverpool manager.
