Liverpool transfer news: Reds target Nico Williams could slip up
Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool targets Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, but Barcelona leads in securing him, Williams’ impressive stats make him highly sought after this transfer window.

Liverpool Interest in Nico Williams

Liverpool have been linked with Athletic Bilbao’s exciting Spain international, Nico Williams, who is known for his pace, direct play, and ability to contribute goals and assists.

Williams’ impressive performance in the European Championship caught Liverpool’s attention, but their hopes of signing him face stiff competition from La Liga rivals Barcelona.

Barcelona Leading the Race

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona is currently leading the race to sign Williams and could announce the deal ‘at any moment.’

Romano stated,

“Barça want Nico Williams as their absolute priority and all of their efforts are going into trying to get a deal done.”

Barcelona are waiting for Williams’ final approval and La Liga’s green light before finalizing the transfer.

The winger’s 27 goal contributions in 37 games last season have made him a highly sought-after player.

Reds’ Dilemma and Future Plans

Despite their admiration for Williams, Liverpool faces a dilemma as he primarily plays on the left side, where they already have Luis Diaz and others.

Selling one of their current left-sided players to make room for Williams seems unlikely, especially given Liverpool’s high valuation of their players.

Instead, Liverpool may need to focus on finding a long-term successor for Mo Salah, whose future at the club remains uncertain as he enters his 30s.

Bringing in a right-sided winger could be a more strategic move for Liverpool as they plan for the future.
