Barcelona are reportedly leading Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, although Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool are also vying for his services, according to Caught Offside.

Transfer negotiations are probably going to happen later in the summer transfer season, as incoming head coach Arne Slot and Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes both acknowledged last week.

The crowd had not anticipated this. It turned out that Jurgen Klopp’s unexpected resignation as manager of Anfield in May marked the greatest turning point since Klopp’s thrilling promotion to the position in 2015. Not so much change has been underway as it has been trampled.

Even yet, Liverpool continues to watch and wait while foreign and Premier League competitors scramble to bring in shiny new additions to advance their initial goals.

Liverpool’s Latest Moves in the Transfer Window

Williams, 21, is expected to depart Basque Country in the upcoming weeks due to an intriguing opportunity presented by a €58 million (£49 million) release clause in his contract. Williams has been one of the star players at Euro 2024.

Liverpool have the financial resources to finalize the deal, and even though the Premier League teams are trailing, a mistake by La Blaugrana could give the Reds the opportunity to score.

Euro 2024: Nico Williams’ Standout Moments

Despite being in the early stages of his professional career, Williams has already established a strong reputation for himself.

He was crucial to Bilbao’s success last season, which included winning the Copa del Rey and ending the team’s 40-year trophy drought, before being called up to Luis de la Fuente’s national team.

With La Roja storming into the European Championship final and securing a thrilling matchup with the unflappable England team, Williams might be on the verge of passing muster with keen-eyed Liverpool scouts and their top six competitors as well.

Williams has been a force to be reckoned with throughout the German-hosted competition, combining deft dribbling with the inventive and perforating skill to breach defenses and cause a litany of problems for his opponents.

Williams, who is a brilliant playmaker and unstoppable ball-carrier, would be a great addition to Slot’s Liverpool team.

Although Luis Diaz, a 27-year-old left winger for Liverpool who played in 51 games last season, is among the best in the Premier League, there have been concerns raised regarding Diaz’s production.

Despite all of his advantages, the Colombian hasn’t yet matched the calibre of his Liverpool predecessor, but Williams has the potential to surpass him.

Nico Williams: A Seamless Fit for Liverpool’s Style

In 2016, Liverpool acquired Sadio Mane from Southampton for a reported £34 million. During his two-year stay on the South Coast, the promising Senegalese winger displayed some electrifying performances.

Mane, now 32, won the entire spectrum under Klopp and, along with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, formed one of the most formidable strikeforce in modern times with 120 goals and 42 assists over 269 appearances.

With his dazzling moves and unwavering mental toughness, Mane has solidified his position as one of the Premier League’s best wingers. Klopp, who was raving about his “unbelievable level,” even went so far as to call him “world-class.”

In his last season on Merseyside, 2021–2022, Liverpool battled valiantly on four fronts to attempt an unprecedented quadruple, but they faltered in the last week of play, losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid and the Premier League to Manchester City by the narrowest of margins.

Williams could now bring the kind of lightning-fueled anger to Anfield’s door because Mane was enormous the entire time.

According to FBref, the Spaniard is in the top 20% for shot-creating actions, the top 7% for progressive carries, the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90, and the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues for assists over the previous year.

Although Williams may not possess Mane’s natural knack for scoring goals, he nevertheless contributed 27 goals—including 19 assists—across 37 games for Bilbao in the previous campaign.

Antonio Mango, a journalist, has expressed amazement at his “mind-boggling” abilities, which makes sense.

This kind of playmaking ability may be very beneficial for a Liverpool team that wants to succeed under Slot’s tutelage. Proven strikers like Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo would be excellent complements for Williams’ approach.

Although Diaz is a fantastic player, Liverpool will try to recoup more than £50 million if they want to let him depart this summer.

If all the pieces fit together perfectly, Spain’s new left-sided sensation is the best player available. FSG needs to put everything on the line to stop Barcelona and finish this one.
