Arne Slot will need to make a quick impression on his Liverpool players to avoid falling victim to an issue Jurgen Klopp never had to cope with.
In anticipation of putting his managerial prowess to the test in the Premier League for the first time, the Dutchman has begun work in his new position.
Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip, who both departed the team after their contracts expired, will not be available to him.
Since then, the former has declared his retirement from football, and Matip has not found a new residence and is still single.
Adrian, the seasoned goalie, is expected to depart Liverpool after declining a new contract offer, thus Slot will also be without him.
The 37-year-old, who has spent the previous 11 years playing English football, has already expressed his wish to return to his home country of Spain.
Adrian’s choice to turn down a new contract serves as a stark reminder of the shift in Liverpool culture that Slot will have to contend with.
It indicates that, with the unknowns surrounding them, players will no longer stay for the familial atmosphere when Klopp is not in the dugout.
Because of Klopp’s ability to inspire confidence in his team, players were even prepared to run through concrete barriers to support him.
To maintain his players’ loyalty and emulate Klopp’s culture at Liverpool, Slot will need to establish a strong foundation early on in his leadership.
The former Feyenoord manager highlighted the significance of Klopp’s legacy at Liverpool in his first press conference last week, indicating that he already understands he has huge shoes to fill.
Arne Slot Addresses Media After Jurgen Klopp Leaves
“It’s more special what Jurgen did to this club,”
explained Slot.
“When he arrived he said he was ‘the normal one’, but I think what made him special is the impression he left behind. Winning trophies, of course, but his playing style I think the fans loved it.
Maybe he said he was ‘the normal one’, but I think the fans see him differently. Maybe not as a person, but what he did for the club was more than normal, let’s put it that way.
It takes some time to understand everything. The way I’m going to use my time in the upcoming weeks is, of course, to make the team in the best possible way and the players in the best possible way for us to be ready for the first game.
It always helps if you get to know the city but I think as a manager, and everybody knows, it helps even more if you win most of your games. I think with Jurgen it was a combination of getting to know the city, getting to know the style of play the fans like.”
