Newcastle’s chief executive Darren Eales confirmed Anthony Gordon won’t move to Liverpool after rejecting the deal due to high demands.
Liverpool Decided To Call Off Anthony Gordon Deal
Liverpool briefly entertained the idea of bringing Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon to Anfield this summer.
For a fleeting 24-hour period, it seemed plausible that Gordon could return to his boyhood club, having been offered to Liverpool as part of Newcastle’s efforts to meet their Premier League Profit and Sustainability (PSR) targets and avoid potential sanctions.
However, Liverpool ultimately decided against the deal, primarily due to the terms laid out by Newcastle, which included a hefty transfer fee and the inclusion of young defender Jarell Quansah as part of the exchange.
Magpies’ Cheif
Despite internal concerns at Newcastle that Gordon’s head might have been turned by the possibility of a move, Newcastle’s chief executive Darren Eales was unequivocal in his stance that Gordon would not be sold.
“Look, you know what the market is like, there will always be noise around any sort of transfer deadline,”
Eales told journalists, including the Northern Echo’s Dominic Shaw.
“For us, it was one of those situations where we knew what we had to get to. In the end, we had to do the deals that were right for the club, that made us compliant. But we kept what I would say are our core players, the type of players like Isak, Gordon, Bruno, Joelinton – those players who are our core.”
When asked by The Athletic if he expected Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Bruno Guimaraes to remain at Newcastle for the upcoming season, Eales confidently replied, “Yes.”
Deal Off The Table
Liverpool, meanwhile, are not expected to pursue Gordon further. Although the offer to sign him followed a previous enquiry into his availability, the Reds’ recruitment team appears to be content with their current options.
As it stands, Liverpool’s squad is well-stocked in Gordon’s preferred position on the left wing, with Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez all capable of playing there.
Unless Gordon himself pushes for a transfer, a move to Anfield seems unlikely at this stage. However, the situation could change depending on player movements.
