As Liverpool prepare for the new season, one of the club’s promising young prodigies has found himself at the crossroads. Sepp van den Berg, a young defender with immense potential, is in a transfer limbo — will he stay at Anfield or make a dramatic exit?
Despite a solid pre-season performance, the Dutchman’s position in the first team is in question. And he could be on the move before the summer transfer window closes.
Van den Berg’s pre-season appearances included starting positions against Real Betis and Arsenal. He seemed to be a key player in Slot’s plans for Liverpool’s upcoming season. However, while Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Ibrahima Konate are commanding the defense lineup, the young defender might find his playtime severely limited.
With increasing squad depth of the Reds, Van den Berg’s role might diminish in the fierce competition for spots. The 22-year-old spent his last season on loan at Mainz, after a previous stint with Schalke. His experience in the Bundesliga has made him a sought-after prospect.
What’s Next for Sepp van den Berg?
Reports from Kicker indicate that Van den Berg is keen on a return to Germany, with both Wolfsburg and Mainz expressing interest. His craving for regular first-team football makes perfect sense, given the need for consistent game time for his development at this stage in his career.
Not to mention, Liverpool recently rejected an £8 million bid from PSV. This makes the situation more complicated and Liverpool’s intentions vaguer. The question is:
Do they want to keep Van den Berg at Liverpool?
Or
Are they waiting for a better offer?
While manager Arne Slot may see value in retaining him, it is equally possible that Liverpool are holding out for a more lucrative deal. The club’s stance on his future reflects Liverpool’s balancing strategy between immediate squad needs and long-term financial considerations.
For now, Van den Berg remains a part of Liverpool’s 2024/25 squad. However, with the transfer window still open, anything can happen anytime.
